Jazz

Routine incorporating a majority of jazz technique. Division is to be calculated using either jazz or ballet training (whichever is greatest).

Character Ballet

Routine utilizing a majority of ballet technique to portray a character. Demi-character routines are to be entered in this category.

Classical Ballet

Routine incorporating classical ballet technique.

Lyrical

Routine utilizing primarily jazz technique to express emotion. Balance, control and extension should be demonstrated. Division is to be calculated utilizing either ballet or jazz training (whichever is greatest).

Contemporary/Modern

Routine incorporating primarily ballet or modern technique. Division is to be calculated utilizing either modern or ballet training (whichever is greatest).

Pointe

A routine where 50% or more of the dancers are on pointe or 50% or more of the routine is performed on pointe. The division is to be calculated utilizing overall ballet training, not pointe training. Pointe routines will now be in a separate category (e.g., contemporary/modern pointe small group).

Song & Dance

Pre-recorded vocals are not permitted during the “song” portion in solos. In Song & Dance category use completed years of training in dance discipline performed.

National 

Routine of national origin, e.g., Highland, Polynesian, Ukrainian, East Indian.

Hip Hop

Routine consisting primarily of hip-hop and street dance technique. Division is to calculated using either hip-hop or jazz training (whichever is greatest).

Acro

Routine incorporating a majority of acrobatic technique and tricks.

Novelty

Includes song and dance solos with pre-recorded vocals, lip-synching, dramatization, stage, etc. In Novelty category use completed years of training in the dance discipline performed.

Note: A routine that should be entered in one of the other performance categories should not be entered in this category. Please do not enter “extra” tap, jazz, lyrical, etc., routines in this category.


20 – 29 years

If the average age of the dancers in the group is 20 years & over and includes teachers/former dancers and/or semi-professional dancers, the routine must be entered in this 20-29 years category. Otherwise the dancers can choose to enter the routine in the 20-29 year category or the adult category.*

Adagio Duo/Trio

A routine where male / female partnering and suspended lifts occur (i.e., any lift where the weight of the female is supported by the male partner). N.B. There is no minimum number of lifts required. This type of routine applies ONLY in the categories of jazz, character ballet, classical ballet, lyrical, contemporary/modern and pointe. Please enter all other adagio duos/trios in the regular categories.

Productions

Performances can consist of any number and combination of dance and musical theatre disciplines. A 5 minute set-up and 5 minute take down period will be scheduled for each production. Productions requiring more than 10 minutes total time will be charged $50. There are no age groups or division categories for productions.*

Adult

Routine where the majority of the dancers are recreational adult students. Family routines can be entered in this category, e.g., mom and daughter, grandpa and grandson/granddaughter. There are no age categories for the adult category.*

Props  Props are allowed in all categories, but if extraordinary set-up
and take down time is required there will be a $50 surcharge.
